What's Your Guild Doing?

SERVICE PROJECTS
When quilt guilds get together it isn’t long before they have a service project started. Some guilds have had the same project for years, others change regularly. Many have several going at the same time!

Coastal Quilters of NE Florida has made 53 lap quilts/afghans and 2 bed afghans for the Avanti Nursing Home. This Summer they plan to concentrate on the Linus project. In the Fall, they’ll continue their annual contest to make doll quilts for the Salvation Army. Last year they had 53.

Manatee Patchworkers are making baby quilts for the SOLVE project. 20 have been given and 15 more were collected recently

The All Star Quilters have set a goal to make a quilt for every child in the foster care group homes run by the daniel Foundation. They have been making placemats for Meals-On-Wheels clients for so long, they don’t know how many years or placemats!

HOW DOES YOUR GUILD FILL ITS PROGRAM SCHEDULE?
WHAT IS THE BEST "DO-IT-OURSELVES" IDEA YOU'VE USED?
DO YOU HAVE ANNUAL EVENTS ?

The Central Florida Quilters
have been around for more than 15 years, so they have lots of traditions when it comes to programs. The December meeting is a potluck; the Board of Directors' Installation is a meeting and also there's a guild birthday party meeting (with a yummy cake!). The slow Summer months feature a "garage sale" to help members get rid of those UFO's. Another popular program is "Vendors Night", where local shop owners visit and share what's going on (not to mention some after-meeting shopping). Demo Night has guild members volunteer to demonstrate a new technique or pattern, and local and national teachers are brought in for lectures and classes. They usually have a mystery quilt or round robin ongoing, as well as a Block of the Month.

The All Star Quilters
divide their membership list into 4 groups each year, then each quarter ,one group is responsible for a program. Each group chooses their topic, often a "hands-on" project with kits made up. This is a great way to get people to share what they know, and allows the shy members to participate in the background, The groups are different each year, which helps members get to know one another better as they work together. The January meeting is always a Birthday Party (and is one of the group assignments) and Installation of Officers. May or June is the Annual Challenge Show, which has ranged from blocks to full quilts, and weird or no fabric...the chair has personal choice so it's different each year. Viewers vote for their favorite quilt, then the top 3 are co-winners, and often all participants get a small prize.

WHO'S YOUR CHARITY?
Your Editor knows that we all have some sort of community service project, but you all must be far too humble to mention what they are!

The Berry Patch Quilt Guild in Plant City
makes baby blankets for the Spring (a Tampa shelter that protects women and children from abusive situations). They also make lots of small bears for the South Baptist Hospital to use in a variety of areas.

The All Star Quilters Guild in Jacksonville
has been making placemats for Meals-On-Wheels for several years. The area coordinator sends one with the delivery on each client's birthday. They also are completing a 2-year project with Clara White Mission, who provides services for the homeless. Last year utility quilts were made to be handed out for use on the street in cold weather. This year the shelter is opening so they are making quilts to be used by long-term residents. Half of their raffle quilt profits will also go the Mission. Each year or two a new project is selected so a greater variety of members' interests are met. Past charities have included HabiJax, and Hubbard House Women's Shelter. They also have a Food Bank collection twice yearly.
