Quilters of Lake Yale U. a
rousing success!
The fun
started on Wednesday afternoon, with check in and then you were free to do
anything until the Teachers Meet and Greet. That evening 3 “sewing
slaves”, (Betsy O’Neill, Julie Mainor, and Elizabeth Hess,) were
auctioned off to the highest bidders. They each spent one day doing sewing
tasks, and those who did not win one of these assistants were quite
envious!

Sunnie the Chairman of FUN
AKA
The Homecoming Queen |
| Every evening the Chairman of FUN had us entertained in someway.
Sunnie Malesky, who was the Chairman of Fun, always had a BIG smile,
so you know she had something up her sleeve. She spent many hours prior to
Symposium making plans for the activities. There were many activities with
daily quizzes, the Daily NoozPaper, and Packages From Home. You could
purchase a chance for a dollar on any of the three packages. One package
was drawn for each evening. The winners were Ginny King and
Edith Werner, and the big Saturday package was won by Betsy O’Neill.
It included a $50.00 gift certificate to any quilt shop in Florida, and
she chose “The Quilt Shop of Deland”. |

| “The Big Game on Friday Night” I thought was the
most fun. There were three team captains, Dori Hawks, Kelly
Woodworth and Paula Sheron, and each had 2 more team members and
cheerleaders. All the teachers took part in the Big Game either as a
team member or a cheerleader. The rest of us also cheered them all
on. The Big Game consisted of making blocks under a time limit, with
work stations spread out all over the large room. Once a team got a
block or blocks done, they turned them in and got the next block’s
instructions to do. The first team to finish all the blocks in the
allotted time won the Big Game. The blocks were to be made into a
charity quilt or quilts, with the winning team choosing who got the
quilts. Quilts Without Borders, for the orphanage in Ethiopia, was
the choice of The Seamerai Ninja Stitchers. Runners up were the
Raging Quilt Team and the Extreme Quilters (complete with “war
paint”). I can tell you, everyone had a good time that evening! |

We can’t forget the ugly bag of fabric drawing. There were four or five
different size pieces of fabric (nothing matched) in the bag. The winner
of this bag has to make something with the fabric before the next SSQA
function. It was won by Linda Baca, a new member. She was allow to
keep it or pass it on to someone. She thought for a little while and gave
it to Artha Callinan who said she could do what was requested with
the fabrics.
The teacher committee was Dee Duckworth (chair), Pat Arends, Paula
Sheron, and Karen Patton.
They met 18 months before Symposium to discuss potential teachers and
types of classes to offer. The committee communicated via email and met
personally 3 other times to finalize the faculty and class offerings.
The faculty and classes were:
Scott Murkin – Asheboro, NC
www.scottmurkin.com
Bustin’ Out All Over – Reverse Appliqué by Machine; Machine Quilting
without Marking; and the Thursday lecture: “Quilt As Desired”
Diane Smith – Melbourne, FL
www.fibersmith.com
Fabric Painting; Fabric Embellishment; and Weaving 101 & 102
Louisa Smith— Colorado
www.Quiltescapes.com
Strips & Curves (2 day) Design with emphasis on color & value placement
using templates; One Patch Plus – Use templates to achieve blocks with
curves; and the Sunday Annual meeting lecture “Strips & Curves”.
The Teachers were enthusiastic participants throughout the Symposium.
They attended all of the evening activities and cheerfully interacted with
attendees during meals and social time. Dee personally received an email
from Scott and a note from Louisa telling her how much fun they had at
Lake Yale University and how much they enjoyed the members of SSQA.
Since many of the classes were small, it enabled significant
teacher/student interaction. Those who took classes were given a greater
amount of teacher input & assistance.
All who attended had a great time and even commented that the food was
good. Be sure to go to the SSQA Forum and look at
more pictures of all the
happenings at Symposium.

A personal note…. SSQA is looking for a Symposium Chairman because I decided that
it was time for me to step down. I have thoroughly enjoyed being the
chairman of the symposium but I have done four symposiums and I had lots
of fun doing each of them. Each symposium was different with two being
held at hotels and two at church retreat centers.
I have really enjoyed working with all the different SSQA members in
putting on the symposium. The Chairman’s job is really is not a hard job
once you get your committees in place.
I want to thank all the members who have supported me as chairman of
the symposium and hope that one member or possibility two who could
co-chair will step up to do the next symposium. If you are interested and
want to know what the job entails, you can call or e-mail me and we can
talk.
Once you get your chairman in place the job is really easy. I will help
in anyway I can in getting the symposium planned.
Thanks for all the Great Memories,
ART
