A Quilt Discovery
Day is an event held to find and make records of the wonderful
quilts that are currently residing in Florida. While state-made
quilts are especially interesting, the goal is to gather as much
information on as many different quilts as possible.
These events are exciting for quilters and the general public
as quilts are shared and everyone learns more about these
creations that are both craft and art.
Once entered in the
Quilt Index, the information & photos
will be available to anyone who wants to see and study them
online. Owners’ personal information is not part of that data.
When quilts come to a Discovery Day, they stay with the
owner. They go to several stations (tables) where volunteers
measure and examine the quilts, ask questions and fill in the
form that collects all the information available. The quilt is
photographed with a number on a card so the digital image can be
matched to the correct paperwork later.
Owners are encouraged to bring with them as much information as
possible about the quilt and it’s maker.
Groups who host a Quilt Discovery Day often practice with
their own quilts one day, and have an open event for the public
on another day.
These events can be done as fund-raisers, too. A large
donation jar may be set out...while a set fee might discourage
people from sharing their quilts, those who do have funds are
happy to contribute for the information they receive. You may be
able to negotiate a shared fee with an appraiser or other
textile expert.
At this time, only quilts recorded as part of the
Florida
Quilt Project (or previous documentations) can be included for
acceptance in the
Quilt Index.
Any group interested in quilts may host a Quilt Discovery
Day...it does not have to be a quilt guild!
