Vicky's Quilts
Author of "Hawaiian Appliqué"
Teaches Traditional Hawaiian Quilting
Lectures on Hawaiian Quilting
Vicky Fleming took up quilting, beginning with Hawaiian style quilts, in 1980
after her first trip to Hawaii. Landlocked in arid Colorado, she used quilting
as a way to stay in touch with the Islands. A quilt group called "The Ha'ole
Connection" kept up her momentum by meeting monthly to quilt only Hawaiian
quilts. Living in Florida since 1993, Vicky continues to create Hawaiian quilts.
She authored a book, "Hawaiian Appliqué" with American Quilter's Society, which
emphasizes traditional and historical styles. While an advocate for working "the
old, slow way", making traditional style quilts completely by hand, Vicky also
makes contemporary Hawaiian art quilts with elaborate machine stitching.
Vicky's quilts have been exhibited in Colorado, Florida, Houston, and Paducah.
She wrote about "The Ha'ole Connection" for Lady's Circle Patchwork Quilts
magazine in 1991. At the 2004 AQS Show at Paducah, Vicky lectured on Hawaiian
Quilting, taught a class called "Hawaiian Quilting 101", and participated in the
All-Star Reviews. She is currently teaching and lecturing on Traditional
Hawaiian Quilting and working on a pattern line of Contemporary Hawaiian quilts.
